4,052 Miles - David Friedman and Tony Miceli
4,052 Miles - David Friedman and Tony Miceli
This is the first record on the new label 'Hit the Bar Records'.
Two vibraphones and no other instruments... for an entire record? In lesser hands, one might say no thanks. However, when the mallets are in the hands of David Friedman and Tony Miceli, who both represent the instrument’s upper echelon of artistic accomplishment, the prospect of a two-vibe project becomes intriguing and enticing. In addition to simply being great music, the seven tracks here serve as a rich, varied example of the vibraphone's underappreciated musical possibilities — rather then compete for sonic space or turn the affair into a cutting Contest (in the parlance of previous jazz eras), Friedman and Miceli recognize 4042 Miles as an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the vibraphone’s full range of expressive, conceptual and stylistic capabilities. While each brings existing personality to this table, together they forge an organic, two–vibraphone identity that is musically satisfying, as well as intellectually compelling. -Anthony Smith
